Financing an auction car: pre-approval, payment and title

Arrange financing before you bid, not after. An auction sale is binding when the hammer falls, and the house sets the payment deadline, not your lender. Woodside Credit, J.J. Best, RM Sotheby’s, Mecum and Barrett-Jackson’s named partner all offer some form of pre-approval or auction financing, per their sites on October 24, 2026.

Why pre-approval matters more at auction

At an auction, your winning bid is a commitment, and any buyer’s premium the auction charges comes on top of it. If your loan falls through, the auction house’s terms decide what happens next, and none of the outcomes are good for you.

A pre-approval tells you the most a lender will advance and on what conditions. Ask specifically whether the approval covers the buyer’s premium, whether the lender needs an inspection or appraisal, and how fast it can wire funds once you win.

A few details worth reading closely. RM Sotheby’s also offers advances to sellers of up to 60% of a car’s estimated hammer price, and equity release against cars you already own, which matters if you’re selling one car to fund another. Mecum Financial doesn’t name its partner lenders and says it covers titled automobiles and non-commercial trucks, not RVs or race cars. Its 48-month limit is short next to what specialty lenders publish, so compare the payment both ways. Bring a Trailer’s wording is “may be available,” and it names no lender or terms, so treat it as a possibility rather than a plan.

Using an outside lender

You don’t have to use the house’s financing. Woodside’s FAQ says it finances purchases “at an auction,” and J.J. Best’s FAQ answers the auction question with “Certainly!” An outside lender lets you compare terms, and it lets you use the same approval across different houses.

The trade-off is coordination. The house’s own lender already knows its paperwork and deadlines. An outside lender has to get the bill of sale, title documents and wire instructions from the auction and fund on time. Confirm the lender has done deals with that specific house.

When payment is due

Every auction sets its own deadline for paying in full after the sale, and its own penalties for missing it. We didn’t find one we could cite as typical, so read the buyer terms of the auction you’re registering for and give your lender those exact dates. If the lender can’t commit to funding inside the window, you either bring cash for the gap or don’t bid.

Getting it titled at home

Most big auctions sell cars that will be registered in another state. Woodside and J.J. Best both say they handle out-of-state title work, but you still have to meet your own state’s rules. No DMV page we read treats auction purchases differently from any other out-of-state purchase.

California

The DMV’s out-of-state guide requires the application (REG 343), the last out-of-state title, a Verification of Vehicle (REG 31) completed by a DMV employee, law enforcement officer or licensed vehicle verifier, and smog certification for gasoline cars from 1976 and newer. Fees are due within 20 days. A car less than two years old with under 7,500 miles that wasn’t built to California emissions standards is prohibited unless exempt, which matters for nearly new exotics bought out of state.

Texas

TxDMV says the car must be titled in your name within 30 days of the sale to avoid penalties, registered within 30 days of bringing it into the state, and pass a Texas inspection. A VIN inspection (form VTR-68-A) is required for any car never titled in Texas.

If you’re also thinking about antique plates on an older car, each state has age and use rules; the classic car guide has a five-state table.

The order of operations

  1. Get your lender’s approval before you bid, with any buyer’s premium included, and ask about inspection requirements.
  2. Line up agreed-value or replacement-value insurance so you can bind it the day you win. Mecum Financial requires full replacement-value coverage.
  3. Read the auction’s payment deadline and send it to your lender.
  4. Set your ceiling with the calculator, with any premium included in the price.
  5. After the sale, get the title paperwork moving with your state’s requirements in mind.

Questions people ask

Can you finance a car bought at auction?

Yes. Woodside Credit and J.J. Best both say they finance auction purchases, and several auction houses arrange financing for their own sales. Get approved before you bid.

Does Barrett-Jackson offer financing?

Its financing page names Woodside Credit as its finance partner and says bidders can register using Woodside Credit as their method of payment.

When do I have to pay after winning an auction?

Each auction sets its own payment deadline in its buyer terms. Read them before you register, because your lender has to fund inside that window.
